Our mission is to protect children and strengthen families so they flourish.
About us
Governor Inslee signed HB 1661 on July 6, 2017, creating the Department of Children, Youth, and Families (DCYF). DCYF restructures how the state serves at-risk children and youth with the goal of producing better outcomes in all Washington communities. DCYF oversees several services now offered previously through the state Department of Social and Health Services and the Department of Early Learning (DEL). These include all programs from the Children’s Administration, such as Child Protective Services, the Family Assessment Response program and adoption support, as well as all DEL services, including the Early Childhood Education and Assistance Program for preschoolers and Working Connections Child Care. As of July 1, 2019, DCYF also administers programs offered by the Juvenile Rehabilitation office, the Office of Juvenile Justice and the Child Care Subsidy Program. Those programs include juvenile rehabilitation institutions, community facilities and parole services.

I spent three packed days in #Spokane, connecting with the robust "DCYF ecosystem." We don't operate in a vacuum when serving kids and families. So, in addition to meeting with our amazing WA Department of Children, Youth, and Families staff, I also met with and visited the partners all around us that help us do this critical work. Here are a few of the politicians and service providers, tribes and judicial partners I spent time with: Mayor Lisa J Brown, Rep. Timm Ormsby, Sen. Marcus Riccelli, Maddie's Place, Rising Strong, Sally's House, Robyn Nance and the Teen and Kid Closet, Judge Schmidt, Commissioner Ressa, Family Impact Network, Spokane Indian Tribe, Mockingbird Host Home, Spokane County Health Department Did I miss you while I was in town? No worries! I'll be back.

On this Indigenous People's Day, I'd like to share my gratitude for the Government to Government relationship WA Department of Children, Youth, and Families has with tribes across our state. Last week, I had the honor of meeting with tribal leaders of the Spokane Tribe in Spokane. Thank you for the warm welcome, relationship building, important conversations and healing work you do for your members and the community at large!

Abuse often begins with subtle behaviors that may not seem alarming at first. These “little things” can slowly escalate over time, making it harder for someone to recognize what’s happening until the control or harm is much stronger. Knowing the signs can help you recognize when something isn’t right, for yourself or someone else in your life. #DVAM #Every1KnowsSome1 #OctoberIsDVAwarenessMonth

Domestic Violence can happen to anyone. No one is immune: It doesn’t matter how successful, strong, or independent someone seems. It’s never the victim’s fault: Abuse is always a choice made by the person causing harm. It often stays hidden: Many people experiencing domestic violence don’t talk about it because of fear, stigma, or dependence on their partner. Share this post to let people know that you stand for happy, healthy, safe relationships and support survivors of abuse and violence.
