#OnThisDay 🗓️: Dwight David Eisenhower was born on October 14, 1890, in Denison, Texas. Known as "Ike," he served as the 34th president of the United States from 1953 to 1961. USS Dwight D. Eisenhower (#CVN69), built by Newport News Shipbuilding, A Division of HII, was named in Eisenhower's honor for his contributions to U.S. military history. A veteran of the US Army he held the title of supreme commander of the Allied forces in Western Europe during World War II. CVN 69 joined the US Navy fleet as the third nuclear-powered and second Nimitz-class aircraft carrier in 1977. October 11 was the 50th anniversary of CVN 69's christening. As she nears 50 years of service in the Navy, HII is honored to have built this ship that continues her namesake's legacy of service to our Nation. 📸: U.S. Navy/MC3 Sarten
