Yesterday we joined the annual Big Apple Crunch, celebrating healthy eating and the joy of local food! 🍎🎨 The students got creative with apple painting, learning that wellness can be both fun and delicious. Big thanks to the NYC Food Policy Center at Hunter College and all our community partners for bringing us together to celebrate nutritious food and healthy habits across NYC! ❤️🍏 #BigAppleCrunch #WellnessInTheSchools #FoodEducation #FeedKidsRealFood #NYC

About us
Wellness in the Schools inspires healthy eating, environmental awareness and fitness as a way of life for kids in public schools across the country. Through meaningful public/private partnerships with school leadership, teachers, chefs, coaches, parents and kids, Wellness in the Schools creates hands-on programs such as Cook for Kids, Green for Kids and Coach for Kids. These programs provide healthy foods, healthy environments and opportunities for regular play to help kids learn and grow. In 2003 a group of concerned public school parents united around the conviction that healthier bodies make healthier minds and that, conversely, unhealthy school environments interfere with student health, school attendance and academic achievement. We had a simple goal: for children to have the best possible environment in which to learn and grow. Wellness in the Schools grew out of that initial goal, and was incorporated as a 501c3 non-profit organization in 2005. WITS believes in the healthy bodies, healthy minds mantra, and in order to shape both we provide two hands-on programs: Cook for Kids and Coach for Kids. We support these programs with the ethos that schools should be as sustainable and environmentally responsible as possible, which is also embodied in the goals of our Green for Kids model. Together these programs create healthier meals, healthier environments and opportunities for regular play and fitness activities.

“Did you know school cafeterias serve nearly 30 million lunches a day? That’s a lot of food… food that plays a critical role in supporting the health, wellness, and academic performance of children across the US. This #NationalSchoolLunchWeek, we’re celebrating the dynamic work of grantee partners including Wellness in the Schools, ScratchWorks, Chef Ann Foundation, and others in leading efforts to help schools use whole, fresh ingredients and scratch cooking to give students great tasting and nutritious meals to help them thrive. That’s a recipe for change everyone can support!” —Emily Yu, Newman’s Own Foundation’s Chief Partnerships & Programs Officer Meet Newman’s Own Foundation’s Nutrition Education & School Food grantee partners: https://lnkd.in/eUfwnYkQ Photo: Nancy Easton of Wellness in the Schools, Maralyn O'Brien of Chef Ann Foundation, and Emily Yu at a Food Tank event in NYC; Chef Ann Foundation's Black Bean and Sweet Potato Tacos #WorldFoodDay #SchoolLunch #SchoolFood #FarmToSchool #F2SMonth

I am honored to have received the Spirit of the City Award from NYC Service, highlighting my work and what Wellness in the Schools does every school day to ensure access to nourishing food and active play across our largest district, New York City. We are proud to transform school wellness by empowering educators, chefs, and policymakers to rethink food and fitness in schools and are excited to continue the great work in this city! Represented at the award ceremony by my wonderful colleague, WITS Program Director Marion Williams. https://lnkd.in/ezuuNFBV

Extremely proud of the second ScratchWorks Gathering, taking place next week in Minneapolis, MN, and bringing together food service professionals from 81 districts across the country. At a time when the country is revisiting children’s health and school meals, it’s more important than ever to address the complexities of transitioning away from ultra-processed foods to provide the sound nutrition students need for health, wellbeing and educational success. There’s no better time than now to bring together thought leaders and forward thinkers in the school food reform space. We're proud to work alongside Chef Ann Foundation, Life Time Foundation, Whole Foods Market Whole Kids Foundation, and so many others to advance scratch cooking in public school kitchens nationally. https://lnkd.in/dMR88hYh

Campbell's has been a proud supporter of Wellness in the Schools for over a decade, and I have been lucky enough to partner with the brilliant Marion Williams and Nancy Easton, who have inspired me throughout my career at Campbell's. This national nonprofit reaches 1M students across over 2,000 U.S. public schools every day with access to nourishing food and active play. In our Full Futures initiative in Camden, NJ, Wellness in the Schools works with several program partners to advance the school nutrition environment through recipe development, nutrition education, and culture building for thousands of students, families, and school staff. Wellness in the Schools is celebrating its 20th Anniversary, and rather than the traditional gala, they are celebrating and raising funds for their work by selling 20 amazing culinary experiences with all purchases directly supporting their programming. Consider gathering a group of friends to benefit from one of these unique experiences - all for a great cause. https://lnkd.in/dU3avEZb
