If governments and businesses can get forests right in Belém, it can mean a future where thriving ecosystems underpin thriving economies.    Companies increasingly see the economic risks of #nature loss - supply chains worth trillions relying on stable rainfall, fertile soil and predictable seasons. But to halt and reverse the loss of millions of hectares of tropical forest lost each year, they need to go much further than voluntary pledges.     In a joint article in Financial Times' Sustainable Views ahead of ‘the Amazon COP’, Eva Zabey of Business for Nature and I outline how business can be credible partners for governments in tackling deforestation – both through their transition plans and by working with governments to accelerate innovative finance mechanisms.     #COP30 offers a major opportunity for governments, businesses and investors to back initiatives such as the Tropical Forests Forever Facility (TFFF) to support forest-rich countries to conserve tropical forests. Meanwhile, the Race to Belém campaign is another practical model for scaling blended finance and supporting Indigenous peoples, traditional and local communities.    This is more than another #climate summit. “Businesses are moving, not because of rhetoric or political ideology, but because clean energy and decarbonisation now underpin competitiveness.”  In a new opinion piece for BusinessGreen, our Chair Sir Ian Cheshire reflects on how, amid the political heat over the UK’s #NetZero transition, the economic signals are far clearer. For instance: 📈 The UK’s net zero sector contributed £83.1 billion to the UK economy in 2024 and is growing roughly three times faster than the economy overall.  ✅ Last year saw £23 billion in investment in green industries.   💼 The sector now supports nearly 951,000 full-time equivalent jobs across the UK, with productivity and wages above national averages. However, Sir Ian argues, the government’s leadership on climate is uneven – leading to ambition outpacing delivery. Today, over 130 businesses and investors including Coca-Cola Europacific Partners, Iberdrola, Signify, Triodos Bank and VELUX are calling on EU policymakers to ensure an effective implementation of the #CleanIndustrialDeal which, coupled with a 90% #EU2040 climate target, can make Europe the engine of global clean industrialization. Next on the EU policy agenda, the #CleanIndustrialDeal (CID) is the missing piece for how the EU will drive the clean energy transition and boost competitiveness. It sets out how industrial policy will meet the EU’s climate goals, notably the 90% GHG emissions reduction target by 2040 being discussed by Heads of State next week. Done right, it will unlock the benefits of affordable and clean energy, demonstrating how lead markets will drive clean product development and quality jobs. Business stands ready to deliver. International fertilizer company Yara International is decarbonizing its industrial heat with thermal energy storage.  Partnering with ENERGYNEST, the company integrated a 4 MWh ThermalBattery™ into its production facility in Porsgrunn, Norway. The ThermalBattery™ recovers industrial surplus heat and feeds industrial processes that require steam. “The climate economy is delivering.” We welcome the open letter to world leaders ahead of COP30 from the World Economic Forum’s Alliance of CEO Climate Leaders. The Alliance letter underscores that the transition towards a resilient and low-carbon economy is a major commercial opportunity. At the Coalition, we too believe that this transformation supports wider societal goals - strengthening energy security and independence, enhancing reliability, driving economic growth - and potentially generating a net gain of 10 million jobs globally by 2030. We’ll be at Reuters Energy Transition Europe on 20 October in London, discussing how trends in electrification & clean energy affect fossil fuel demand — and what means for the European Union's energy strategy.
