Celebrating World Wildlife Day with the Burrowing Owl (Athene cunicularia), a small long-legged mostly terrestrial owl with 18 subspecies native to open landscapes of North and South America. Burrowing owls nest and roost in re-purposed burrows made by other animals, are active during the day, and when threatened, will retreat to their burrows where they make hissing sounds mimicking a rattlesnake. As predators they play an important role in ecosystem function. Throughout their range, these personable head bobbing owls are vulnerable to habitat loss and other threats and consequently are protected by states and land management agencies. Our Environmental team works with our clients and stakeholders to conduct burrowing owl surveys, implement impact mitigation strategies, and occasionally, relocations of the owls to adjacent habitats out of harm's way. Cheers to the head bobbing "Howdy-do" burrowing owls!

As Black History Month comes to an end, we want to take a moment to highlight the important work that WestLand's own Jennifer Levstik is doing to help Tucson's Historic Preservation Office identify historically significant places with ties to Tucson's African American community. Jennifer was contracted as a Historic Preservation Consultant by the city to conduct surveys of potential locations for historic preservation. Through community outreach, hundreds of buildings were identified, all built before 1978. Phase two of the project is now underway, which will include a detailed historic context and an interactive map accessible to the public where they can explore the history of these sites. This will also serve as a management tool for the city to help ensure protection of these historic buildings. WestLand is honored to be part of this important work in recognizing Tucson's historic African American sites. We encourage you to watch this video to learn more about these sites and hear from Jennifer and others about the importance of their preservation: https://lnkd.in/g_VvSxEx
