Halfway Point of Three Years. Global innovators. One shared goal: advancing quantum for real-world impact 🌍 On October 17th, at the GESDA - Geneva Science and Diplomacy Anticipator Summit in Geneva, we announced the 20 Semifinalist Teams in the $5M XPRIZE #QuantumApplications competition. It was an honor to share this moment with Catherine Lefebvre, PhD (GESDA and one of our competition advisors) and Thomas O'Brien (Google Quantum AI), and several of our judges, advisors, and teams, celebrating the collective effort of this milestone. I want to thank our judging panel for their rigor and independence in evaluating over 130 submissions from 31 countries. Out of the 20 Semifinalists: ➡️Ten teams are developing novel algorithms ➡️Eight teams apply known algorithms to new real-world use cases ➡️Two teams focus on enhancing existing approaches. These teams are addressing challenges across four main areas: ➡️ Energy & Materials Discovery: applying quantum simulation to model complex materials and chemistry problems. ➡️ Climate & Environmental Modeling: using quantum optimization and simulation to manage energy systems and improve forecasting. ➡️ Health & Life Sciences: leveraging quantum simulation and machine learning for drug design, protein modeling, and bio-signal analysis. ➡️ Optimization & Infrastructure: developing new optimization algorithms for logistics, resource allocation, and data networks. We’re proud of the progress all teams in the competition have made and encouraged by the diversity and maturity of their work. The Moon has always been a symbol of wonder. For Google Lunar XPRIZE Finalist ispace, inc., it became much more: a mission. 🌕🚀 It all started when ispace Founder and CEO Takeshi Hakamada was in graduate school and saw a presentation by the winner of the Ansari XPRIZE. This lit a spark that led him to the Google Lunar XPRIZE, a challenge to land a rover on the Moon and send images back to Earth. What started as a dream quickly turned into action: ispace entered the competition as part of Team HAKUTO. It wasn’t long until ispace began making great leaps in the space industry. In 2022, the company launched Hakuto-R Mission 1 aboard a SpaceX Falcon 9. It made history that year, traveling farther into space than any privately funded spacecraft had ever before. While the mission ended in a crash into the lunar surface, it delivered something invaluable: proof that private companies can attempt, and learn from, lunar missions. ispace’s story underscores the essence of XPRIZE: success is not only about winning a competition, but about sparking breakthroughs that continue long after. We’re proud to announce that on the 5th and 6th of October, Leitek Innovative Solutions participated in the semi-finals of the XPRIZE Wildfire competition, a global challenge with $11 million prize pool with the aim of revolutionizing wildfire detection and suppression, as part of Team AeroWatch. Semi-finalist teams will be judged based on Real-Time detection capabilities; autonomous decision-making; mobility and suppression capability, and operational safety. Our AeroWatch team (www.aerotech.tech) is an international consortium led by BCN Drone Center and Centre Tecnològic de Telecomunicacions de Catalunya (CTTC), uniting leading companies from across Europe and North America. Together, we’re developing a System of Systems that integrates cameras, satellites, drones and IoT sensors to detect and combat wildfires in real time. Our SafeForest-Shield® early wildfire detection system contributes to the solution with its ability to detect wildfires accurately and rapidly, also allowing for seamless integration with the IoT sensors and the rest of the system helping to bring a safer, smarter, and more resilient firefighting future to life. We’re excited to reveal the Semifinalists of the XPRIZE #QuantumApplications competition! 🖥️ Narrowed down from 133 submissions across 31 countries, these Semifinalist teams are helping to bring quantum algorithm innovation from concept toward real-world capability. Prior to this, the quantum field had been focused on theory, rather than application, but these teams are proving that the quantum industry is growing. We’re proud to share that half of the teams proposed entirely new algorithms, which is uncommon in a field where developing genuinely new approaches is difficult. Across the 20 Semifinalist teams, competitors identified 11 pressing global issues to tackle—many centered on clean energy, climate adaptation, and public health. Some examples include: ➡️ Using quantum simulation to model large biomolecular condensates composed of proteins and RNA. ➡️ Applying quantum measurement theory to biological imaging to minimize measurement-induced damage to fragile samples. ➡️ Developing a new, more resource-efficient framework for quantum simulation of fundamental particles to accelerate the discovery of materials for clean energy and carbon capture. The quality, diversity, and ambition of these submissions reflect a field rapidly maturing and one that’s collaborative and outcome-driven. The #XPRIZEWildfire Autonomous Wildfire Response Track Semifinals continued in Västervik, Sweden, where Team FireSwarm Solutions Inc showcased their full-system approach to autonomous wildfire management. 🚁🔥 Formed after their team lead experienced a devastating wildfire in 2023, FireSwarm has grown into a consortium spanning Canada, the United States, and Sweden. Their solution integrates detection, validation, and suppression into a coordinated system: ➡️ Early detection: thermal sensors and computer vision that work to validate a fire within minutes ➡️ Decision-making: swarm algorithms that enable multiple drones to coordinate with human operators oversight ➡️ Suppression: ThunderWasp, an ultra-heavy-lift UAV carrying 350–400 kg of water ➡️ Observation: overwatch drones provide eyes in the sky to the team The day concluded with a visit to ACC Innovation’s 1,500 square meter facility, where their heavy-lift drones are designed, manufactured, and prototyped in-house.
