About us
Yuhaaviatam of San Manuel Nation is a federally recognized Indian tribe located on the San Manuel Indian Reservation near Highland, California. The Tribe, formerly known as the San Manuel Band of Mission Indians, proudly reclaims their ancestral name —Yuhaaviatam (pronounced “yu-HAH-vee-ah-tahm”) — honoring the deep-rooted heritage and enduring legacy of their people. Exercising their inherent sovereign right to self-governance, Yuhaaviatam of San Manuel Nation is committed to providing essential services to their citizens by building infrastructure, maintaining civil services, and promoting social, economic, and cultural development. As the Indigenous people of the San Bernardino highlands, passes, valleys, mountains, and high deserts, the Yuhaaviatam have called this region home since time immemorial and are committed to remaining a productive partner in the San Bernardino region. Today the tribal government oversees many governmental units including the departments of fire, public safety, education and environment. San Manuel is active in supporting projects in neighboring communities. Nearby cities and towns receive support from the Yuhaaviatam of San Manuel Nation in the way of monetary donations for cultural, social, and economic projects to benefit the common good of the communities in which they live and work. Encompassing gaming, governmental operations and other enterprises, the Yuhaaviatam of San Manuel Nation is one of the largest employers in the Inland Empire area and employs over 7000 people.

Have you ever heard of the call of Yawa’? Rooted in the Serrano concept of acting on one’s beliefs, our commitment to philanthropy is guided by the values of our ancestors—vision, responsibility, and community. To celebrate Native American Heritage Month, we are honored to highlight Stephanie Portillos, Policy and Procedures Specialist for Yaamava' Resort & Casino at San Manuel. Stephanie is a member of the Yurok Tribe in Northern California. She first joined the enterprise in 2018 as an administrative assistant for the Facilities Department before progressing to her current role where she oversees the department’s policies, procedures and training materials. “Since I do not live on or near my reservation in Klamath, California, it was always my intention to pursue a career at a Native-owned enterprise,” said Stephanie. “I believe in the advancement of all Native businesses and seek them out as much as I can to lend my support. At Yuhaaviatam of San Manuel Nation, I truly feel at home because of our shared Native values, especially operating with the next seven generations in mind. I also have a great sense of pride working for this Tribe because of their strong focus on philanthropic efforts for both Team Members and the community.”

This Veterans Day, we celebrate the courage and legacy not only of those who served but are also guiding the next generation of service members. Gina Weghorst, Manager of Onboarding and a proud Navy veteran, is now watching her son Joshua prepare to join the U.S. Army, continuing a family tradition of service. Shawn McManigal, Director of Logistics and Fleet, served in the Navy during the Gulf War. His son Giovanni now serves as a Navy Hospital Corpsman, carrying forward the values of discipline and dedication. Their stories remind us that service is more than a duty — it’s a legacy. Thank you, Gina, Shawn, Joshua, Giovanni and all who serve. #VeteransDay #LegacyOfService #MilitaryFamilies #ThankYouVeterans #SanManuelCareers

To celebrate Native American Heritage Month, we are honored to highlight Donald Frye, Assistant Manager, Facilities at Yaamava' Resort & Casino at San Manuel. Donald is a member of the Mashpee Wampanoag Tribe in Eastern Massachusetts. He first joined the enterprise in 2018 as an electrician before progressing to lead electrician, facilities supervisor and now his current role. “To me, working for a Native-owned enterprise means coming full circle — it’s both an honor and a fulfillment of a lifelong dream,” said Donald. “As a proud member of the Mashpee Wampanoag Tribe, I’ve spent most of my career working for European American companies, and while I’ve always given my best, I often felt a disconnect between my work and my identity. Here at Yuhaaviatam of San Manuel Nation, that’s different. I feel truly seen — not just for the work I do in the Facilities department, but for who I am as a Native person, a warrior for my people, and for all Native nations across Turtle Island. Working for the Tribe allows me to contribute my skills to something bigger than myself — the empowerment, preservation and progress of our communities. It’s more than a job; it’s a way to honor my ancestors and help build a stronger future for generations to come.”
