If you’re building automation workflows in n8n, here’s something I’ve been thinking about: Many people instinctively reach for `$node` to reference outputs from previous nodes. It’s tempting because it’s straightforward… until you start breaking flows into sub-graphs or reusable pieces. This is where `$json` shines. Using `$json` as the preferred way to pass data between nodes: -> Keeps your workflow agnostic of node names -> Makes sub-flows or modular graphs cleaner and reusable -> Forces you to maintain clear signatures/specs for what goes in and what comes out Essentially, `$json` gives you flexibility and future-proofing, while `$node` can become brittle if you ever rename or restructure your flows.
