  • LA County’s Totally New Voting Experience

    NBC Los Angeles

For all my friends, family, and random strangers who find out I worked on the new LA County voting system... this interview with Dean Logan answers many of the questions I’ve been getting recently asking “How is this different than the Iowa app?!”

Well... it’s well made by an amazing team who poured their heart and soul into it during years of design & development. I think you’ll grow to love it.

  • Voting Solutions for All People

    Los Angeles County

The Voting Solutions for All People (VSAP) was developed by the Registrar-Recorder/County Clerk (RR/CC) in 2009 to address an aging voting system and an increasingly large and complex electorate. The project seeks a collaborative approach to voting system design that will put voters at the center and maximize stakeholder participation.

The Voting Solutions for All People (VSAP) project is a ground up redesign of the voting system for Los Angeles County. The new voting system services 6.5 million registered voters over 4500 sq miles and launches for public use in the 2020 primary election.

The primary goal of a voting system is always election integrity. The machines are all ballot marking devices meaning that no tabulation is done at the machine level. The printed ballots are the source of truth and voters review their ballots for accuracy before casting. The user experience of the touchscreen interface is intuitive and easy to understand.

All of this and the system is also the most accessible voting system ever developed. Voters need not identify as "disabled" to use accessible features. The system supports voting for the vision impaired, hearing impaired, motor skilled impaired, and even allows voting by using a mouth straw for voters with severe physical challenges.

The Smartmatic team provided complete UX design on the voting interface, hardware and transport design for 35,000 machines, integration with secure closed looped network, and support for 13 different languages.

After an 18 month development cycle, the result is a secure network of ballot marking devices, a fully audit-able paper based ballot, and a new voting solution for the largest county in the world. The Smartmatic team provided the skills and dedication to make a product that does nothing less than facilitate democracy.
