Last week, Boston City Councilor At-Large Henry Santana visited to learn more about the EQUAL study, where investigators are studying a new blood test to screen for Epidermal Growth Factor Receptor (EGFR) positive lung cancer in healthy individuals at risk for the disease who cannot undergo regular lung cancer screening. Principal investigator and thoracic oncologist Narjust Florez M.D. FASCO, associate director of the Cancer Care Equity Program, designed the study in response to rising rates of lung cancer in younger people and the prevalence in individuals of Asian or Hispanic/Latinx descent who have never used tobacco. Exciting news from Stony Brook University's Renaissance School of Medicine: the Medical Science Training Program (MSTP) has received a five-year, $5.3 million grant from The National Institutes of Health to continue training the next generation of physician-scientists. This funding eases the financial burden for students and also ensures they are equipped to bridge the gap between research and clinical care, bringing discoveries from the lab directly to the bedside. We are pleased to share a recently published study in Data in Brief co-authored by members of our MaineHealth team. The publication details a de-identified dataset of out-of-hospital cardiac arrest resuscitation episodes, curated from real-time clinical systems. This open-access resource is intended to support equity in resuscitation research by making high-quality clinical data more broadly available to investigators.
