Agents aren't just assisting users, they're replacing traditional applications and acting as users themselves. As these roles converge and business models change (licenses > consumption), what are the best ways to think about and measure performance? Which metrics? Traditional user metrics like DAUs and MAUs work when humans use agents (e.g,. chat), but that will shrink as a portion of total activity as agents are triggered by events and work autonomously. In this agentic world, where consumption/usage is monetized, agent actions matter more than the number of agentic users. For example: * Agent Activations (daily/monthly, e.g., DAAs, MAAs), broken out by how they’re initiated, such as by users or triggers (agents, scheduled events, an incoming email, etc.). * Agentic Visits (daily/monthly): The frequency of agent interactions with applications, APIs, or MCP servers. * Actions per Activation: Average number of discrete tasks performed per activation, such as data retrieval, record updates, or agent-to-agent calls. Why not focus more on the number of daily or monthly unique agents? First, I don't think metrics like the number of unique or active agents will matter as much. that the number of unique agents will be very interesting. One unique agent might visit your app or server many times on behalf of 1000s of people, so what matters is the # of activations not the number of unique agents. Also, we don’t know if more or fewer agents is better. For example, one broadly defined agent may have the same activity level as five narrowly defined agents that work together on the same task. This is a design question for agent construction, but there isn't a right answer yet. So worth tracking, but not as interesting yet. How do you think?
