“Careful, lots of accolades to trip over here! A couple of months ago, I worked with Debbie and DBR Career Services to help me answer: 1. Does my resume make sense for the change I want to make 2. Are my career goals realistic 3. After being in my jobs for 10yrs, I wanted feedback from someone with real industry experience. My pre-work on my resume and LinkedIn paid off as we spent minimal time on that and maximum time strategizing how I should approach identifying and applying for opportunities. Her inputs were just so valuable and with the new approach it was notable that I was getting interviews, but what’s more… articulating the thoughts with her really helped me to be most prepared. Ok final accolade, it was a big help to receive a critique and guidance from an executive of P&O. And that’s what DBR Consulting brings, a strong history of practice to learn from. Reach out, I think Debbie would be a fit for you”

How can you help clients transition from technology to finance?
I agree totally… in fact having a mentor, advisor, career coach and a robust network of professional colleagues in both industries is the key for a transition from Technology to Finance. Research the top employers, their work culture, the benefits that are important to you and start to look for open roles on their company career site. Look for the transferable experience you bring and customize your resume for the application you submit. Contact current or former employees at the company within your network to help your application to be reviewed by a live human working on the search. These are productive starting points for your transition from a Technology to a Finance role.

What are the most effective ways to find a personal coach?
In my experience, absolutely take full advantage of a complimentary coaching consultation before engaging any coach for your needs. Do your research on the coach’s experience with their speciality, review social media reviews and LinkedIn prior experience and testimonials/references. Finally, go with your gut reaction to an empathy or genuine understanding displayed by the coach about your personal need for their coaching during your consultation. The right coach is out there for you…. It may take a few consultations to find that right match and then not only will the magic will happen - it is life changing.

What are the most important steps to prepare for a speaking engagement?
In my experience, not only does a Speaker need to be an expert on the topic, they must be an expert on who their audience is and what they are needing to take away from your knowledge, experience and presentation. The single most important element of a successful presentation is to thoroughly research the fears, gaps in knowledge, expected outcomes of your attendees. Know what keeps them up at night, what motivates them and what they are hoping to learn to address both. Prepare, prepare, prepare. Research, dive right in to the organization, company, association, whoever has hired you and be an expert on them! Have fun and love what you do!

What is the purpose of a thank-you note after a job interview?
I can cite at least a dozen examples of when a senior executive has come back to me, as his recruiter, after all level of interviews have been completed and asked which of the Finalists sent me a “thank you” and then who sent them a “thank you”? The answers to these 2 questions contributed to the final hiring decision. Please do send “thank you” emails to everyone in your interview process - it can make the difference of getting the offer!!
