“I worked with Josh at Stimulant where he was co-founder and Technical Director. Josh is that rare combination of engineer and artist, who brings thoughtful collaboration, creativity, and a unique perspective to incredibly complex projects and problems. He's always an advocate for early partnership between creative and development, and the contributions from him and his team not only ensure that whatever we dreamed up was achievable, but also unique and innovative. Technically, Josh is well-versed in a breadth of technical architectures and solutions; I've never heard "no, it's impossible," when he's part of the team. ”

I put a screen on my wall to collect the installation and video art that can’t really be collected. Of course I over-engineered it and ended up with the start of a digital signage platform with sweet hardware controllers and a fancy custom cable. Many screens can be controlled from a central mobile admin panel.
-
City of Hope Museum
An exhibit comprising a touch-screen exploration of the renowned hospital's history, a generative visualization which spans the screens and architectural-scale LEDs, a meditative wishing tree projection, a content management system, and a website which ties the social strategy together. I coordinated multiple engineering teams and was the client-facing technical representative throughout the project.
-
Intel Corporate Museum
Helped to coordinate the production, deployment, and support of ten interactive exhibits over the course of five years, including pieces involving custom hardware, projection, computer vision, and large-format touch. Managed many technical teams and deployment efforts along the way.
-
Ringmaster
I developed a proprietary show control system which monitors the state of an arbitrary number of software and hardware components (PCs, projectors, lighting controllers, etc), alerts when anything goes down, and provides a GUI for administrators and staff to start/stop shows and change settings. Deployed at SkySpace LA and the Stimulant demo space.
-
SkySpace LA Digital Installations
A suite of three installations: a 360° interactive projection, an LED infinity mirror, and a three-story reactive projection. I managed development, QA, and support efforts, and developed a flexible show control system which manages all of the software and hardware involved.
-
One Liberty Place Observation Deck
A touch screen kiosk which lets visitors pan and zoom around a 360-degree gigapixel image of Philadelphia. I managed the development and QA efforts of the application, keeping an eye toward reuse in other installations.
-
Genentech Interactive Lobby Displays
A touch screen digital signage system on Genentech's campus. It's running in seven building lobbies, each with a different configuration of displays and touch sensors, displaying a blend of content from Twitter, building sensors, and the company intranet. I managed the development effort, performed QA, was the main client contact during development, and performed on-site installation.
-
Reactive Data Visualization at One World Observatory, NYC
A 65' by 16' projection greets visitors to the tower by highlighting their origin on a 3D world map and welcoming them in their native language. The experience consists of a Cinder application running at 8k resolution and a node.js server which gets ticket sale and scan data in real time. I managed the development, QA, and deployment teams, and assisted with warranty support. Over a million visitors have been tracked by the system so far.
-
am/pm
An open-source project to perform Application Management and Performance Monitoring for Stimulant's installation projects. Written in node, the tool launches application processes, restarts them if there's an error, and collects logging and analytics information. I am the sole software developer.
-
Space Needle Interactive Kiosks
A pan-and-zoom experience over a gigapixel image with various POIs in the city highlighted, and a 3D video browser that gives insider access to Seattle's most famous landmarks. I managed the development and QA efforts of both experiences, and assisted with warranty support.
-
#dBcube for the Microsoft Cube
Microsoft Garage created a cube full of projectors and Kinects, and needed something fun to show on it. #dBcube is a four-sided digital dance experience that connects dancers on opposite sides of the cube with dynamic virtual ribbons. I coordinated between Microsoft, Decibel Festival, the EMP Museum, our dev/QA/design teams, and the manufacturing partner to get the sculpture up and running in time for the 2014 Decibel Festival in Seattle.
-
Intel Museum Ultrabook™ Exhibit
A transparent touch screen in front of an Ultrabook, surrounded by projection-mapped visuals. The screen of the Ultrabook and the projections on the wall behind it react to user interaction with the LCD. The three systems respond to each other in real-time to create a cohesive experience that rewards attention from both up close and afar. I was the sole software developer.
-
Decibel Festival Digital Schedule
An audio-reactive signage system that combines branded visuals, up-to-the-minute announcements, schedule information, and social media, all with a visual presentation that changes in real-time based on the current music in each venue. The application is built completely in HTML5 for simple deployment and easy updating. I was the sole software developer.
-
Maxim Integrated Touch Wall
A six-screen touch wall in the lobby of a chip manufacturer’s new corporate headquarters. The software included generative and touch-reactive graphics as an ambient mode, and a playful way to navigate content describing the company's history and products. I was the sole developer and assisted with on-site deployment and warranty support.
-
Intel Connect to Life Experience
Attendees used six sensing stations to create shapes which were transformed into unique lifeforms which were projected onto a 2200 square-foot, projection-mapped surface spanning the entirety of Intel’s CES booth. I developed the software for the sensing stations using OpenCV, as well as a system to monitor the status of the computers powering the life-form projection.
-
LoopLoop for Sifteo Cubes
An experimental music sequencer which used a collection of physical cubes, each with a one-inch, 128x128 screen, and the ability to sense its neighboring devices. One cube kept the master sequence, and the others were individual instruments. This was a launch app for the Sifteo platform. I was the sole developer and collaborated with the Sifteo team on the development of their C# SDK.
-
Bing Search for Microsoft® PixelSense™
I was the sole developer on the only application to ship pre-installed on the Samsung SUR40 PixelSense device, the successor to the original Microsoft Surface. The application used Bing's mapping and image search APIs to bring up interesting images and plot directions to nearby points of interest. The image browsing control was deemed novel enough to be later patented. A companion tool allowed administrators to customize the application to fit their venue.
-
WebVizBench.com
In collaboration with Microsoft and Seattle radio station KEXP, Stimulant created WebVizBench.com, an animated and interactive radio playlist visualization and benchmarking application written entirely in HTML5, optimized for Microsoft IE9, and tweaked to harness the power of GPU-enhanced Web browsing. I was the sole software developer.
-
Social Stream for Microsoft PixelSense
An application which aggregates content from RSS, Twitter, and Flickr, and displays those items as an endless stream of news. Items can be pulled from the stream for closer examination and saved to a mobile device. A companion application customizes the look and content of the application for various contexts. I was the sole software developer, and the project was released as open source.
