    Cleantech Open Global Forum 2014

    Local energy startup BitGrid, which was co-founded by Charles Taylor, Justin Hyde, and ECE professor Volker Sorger, was recently named a finalist in the southeast region's CleanTech Open, a competition held by a nonprofit of the same name aimed at identifying promising environmental and energy startups.

    BitGrid won $20,000 package of cash and advances to the CleanTech Open finals, which will be held November 12 and 13 in San Francisco. The grand prize winner of the San Francisco competition will take home a $200,000 prize.

    The GW New Venture Competition was launched in 2009 by John Rollins and the former dean of the GW School of Business, Susan Phillips. John Rollins directed the Competition until his retirement in 2014. Lex McCusker is the current director.

    Initial funding for the Competition was provided by a generous grant from Governor Richard Scott and Annette Scott. Governor and Mrs. Scott have supported the program each year since its inception.

    The GW New Venture Competition has grown significantly since it was founded. The cash prizes have grown from $30,000 in 2009 to more than $200,000 in 2015, and the number of teams have increased to 113 this past year, making it the largest of any university’s competition in the region.
