SUMMARY
Several regulatory changes in Europe’s electricity sector have stimulated competition in the market. National power companies, with monopolistic structures, have evolved into a more dynamic market, creating increased supply choices for consumers.

The electricity prices have also been very much affected by these new regulations, especially influenced by climate change policy that was introduced in 2005. Electricity prices are now affected by both the volatility of the fossil fuel market and the prices of CO2.

All of these new conditions have introduced more competition in the market while offering more choice in terms of sourcing electricity. Consumers need to identify and assess the market changes to better select the way of sourcing their electricity needs. Now, this complex process can be managed by a new electricity sourcing methodology. }

The methodology integrates a series of steps that will allow the electricity users to better understand the current electricity sourcing options and then look to the future to identify the market trends. Details about the company organization and resources have to be considered in order to make a complete assessment of the feasibility of implementing a possible option.

The methodology has been tested in three countries (Croatia, Spain and the UK) with different market conditions, such as monopolistic, transitional and competitive. Case studies are included focusing on each of these markets and which provide an overview of electricity consumers with their electricity profile and market conditions, including details about electricity prices, electricity demand and electricity sourcing options in relation to the market structure.
