    FINITE ELEMENT STUDY OF NORMAL AND SLIDING CONTACT BEHAVIOR
    OF ANALYTICAL RIGID SPHERE ON A COATED DISK UNDER ELASTIC REGION

    The contact of a slider with a rotating disk in a hard disk drive was analyzed using the finite element method. A three dimensional, contact model was developed to study the mechanical response during the contact of a spherical slider corner on a rotating disk. The model was validated by comparing the finite element results with analytical solutions using Hertzian criteria. Stress and Load were obtained for various displacement. The effects of coating on the disk were also investigated by introducing a layer with different material properties. It was found that for a rounded slider corner and normal contact displacement studied in this work, the coating has an insignificant effect on the mechanical response such as load and predictable effects on the deformation of disk and coating within the limit of the study.
