Colleagues clash over patient care or paperwork priorities. How do you navigate this delicate balance?
Patient care over everything else! Document later when able. Paperwork and bureaucracy should not be prioritized over patient care! Simple. As. That. This is not a rebuff of the bureaucratic garbage we deal with on a daily basis but rather a prioritization of duties! Our duty has been, and will always be, to the patient first. Then we can address all the other noise later to satisfy our governmental, regulatory, and often times, intrusive obligations.

How can you effectively advocate for patients with chronic pain?
Being thorough is the most important. Performing and documenting a thorough exam is by far the most important aspect of advocating for a patient. The exam should be followed by objective diagnostic studies that complement the exam and reinforce the diagnosis. That’s how you advocate for the patient.
