Education, once known as the “great equalizer,” is now being called to task for its tendency to disenfranchise and to legitimate inequality due to its obedience to the tenets of capitalism. Two of the nation’s greatest educational thinkers, George S. Counts and Boyd H. Bode provided “instructions” for parents and teachers over 80 years ago that highlight the urgency for action in our schools. Education, once known as the “great equalizer,” is now being called to task for its tendency to disenfranchise and to legitimate inequality due to its obedience to the tenets of capitalism. Two of the nation’s greatest educational thinkers, George S. Counts and Boyd H. Bode provided “instructions” for parents and teachers over 80 years ago that highlight the urgency for action in our schools. This essay provides a contemporary response to Counts and Bode and further reiterates the importance of redirecting schools to return to their original purpose.

They work at nonprofits and for-profit firms, in capacities ranging from founder and CEO to dedicated volunteer. By advocating for and helping finance top-quality affordable housing and education, as well as access to food and medical care, these leaders are setting an admirable example for us all.

For the first time, they say, they've had an opportunity to share their experiences with racism and how they overcame obstacles. They've been encouraged to share their views and open deeper conversations on race with colleagues. Many observe that their insights have a wider impact and are aiming to use that visibility to speak out on inequality in the workplace.
Many have taken on new roles leading new or expanded diversity initiatives as companies vow to improve their practices in recruiting, hiring and retaining talent from diverse backgrounds. And these leaders have redoubled efforts to boost the next generation through nonprofits that help young people succeed in school and prepare for a career. These leaders are seizing the moment. -
