Considering alternative ways to make a positive impact

- Listen, there are so many ways to contribute. A job is just one of them. So my question for you is what can you do while on the path to a career of positive social impact? Don't wait for permission. You can infuse impact into your work no matter where you are in your career. And this approach can also help you test things out, meet new people, and gain experience. There are so many ways to contribute, like volunteering, part-time side hustles, sabbaticals, and fellowships. For instance, say you're passionate about fighting climate change, but that's not what your job is currently. While you're working towards a full-time job, here are ways to make a difference. Do a fellowship like the Climate Justice Fellowship or the Science to Action Fellowship, get involved in climate advocacy work. There are many communities like 350.org, Climate Alliance, Citizens' Climate Lobby and Climate Action Network. You can volunteer with one of them or donate. You can volunteer your time at organizations like Humanitarian Open Street Map that builds and maintains dynamic maps to help humanitarians respond to natural disasters more effectively. You can buy carbon credits to offset your travel or make other personal lifestyle changes to reduce your carbon footprint. These are just examples for the climate. There are countless fellowships and volunteer opportunities regardless of the subject matter and they're just a Google search away. In the resource handout, I include tons of links for where to look for these opportunities and how to get involved with organizations, communities, and movements that align with your values and interests.
