Your people need to feel that they can make decisions to progress their work without constantly having to pick up the phone to ask for your permission. But not everyone knows how to step up and take this kind of accountability. This is why taking a coaching approach to leading a virtual team can be really effective. Guru John Whitmore defines coaching as unlocking people's potential to maximize their own performance. I would build on this to include, unlocking their motivation to change. And there's a theme running through both of these definitions. It's the subtle transfer of responsibility from coach to coachee. And that's where empowerment comes into the equation.
