How to know if someone is engaged
- A question I constantly ask myself in meetings, at networking events, and even on video calls, is "Does this person care?" or worse, "Am I engaging?" Our biggest concern when we're trying to communicate with someone is trying to gauge if they are listening or not. I want to teach you the easiest nonverbal signal to know if someone is truly engaged. Well, it's actually two signals, and they're both micropositives, meaning they show small, nonverbal gestures of engagement, curiosity, and rapport. (bell rings) Wait, did you hear that? Any time we're trying to hear something better, we tilt our head over to the side and expose our ear. This is called a head tilt, and it is a great micropositive. You will often see that when humans, or even our canine friends, are trying to hear something, they tilt their head. You can use this yourself to show people you are listening.
