- [Instructor] A motherboard is the central circuit board in a computer where all major components connect. It provides the physical structure and electrical pathways to allow these components to work together. We've all likely come across one of these inside a desktop PC, a laptop, or even a smaller device. But what's really on it? What components are built into this board and how do they work together? Let's break it down. The motherboard is built around the CPU, making sure it has access to everything it needs to operate. Next, we have the chip set, which is made up of the so-called Northbridge and Southbridge. These are specialized chips that help the CPU connect to the rest of the system. The Northbridge handles high-speed communication. It is also known as the memory controller hub, and it's connected to the CPU by means of the front side bus.
