What does equity in the workplace look like?
- I defined equity in the last section so I want to make sure that I give you my definitions of diversity, inclusion, and belonging, so we can better understand the connection to equity. Diversity is the myriad ways that we are different and similar, including those characteristics that we can see and those that we can't see. This diagram helps us to understand the many layers of diversity and our intersecting identities. For example, I identify as a woman, African American, baby boomer generation, Christian, English speaker. All of these are a part of my identity, and based on our history of exclusion and discrimination, I carry identities such as my race and gender where corrective action is still needed to achieve equity. Inclusion is creating an environment where everyone is appreciated for their uniqueness, regardless of their identities. And they feel like they belong.
