What would you say to someone considering cybersecurity?
- What would I say? I'd say go for it. This is a really exciting time to be in the world of cybersecurity. You know, back when I started in this field more than 25 years ago, cybersecurity was a backwater. Sure, the government agencies where I worked were interested in cybersecurity, but almost nobody else was. You know, back then, companies not only didn't have a cybersecurity department, most companies didn't even have a single person working on cybersecurity issues. Today, our field is growing and flourishing. There are jobs everywhere. Every organization is interested in protecting cybersecurity. So what I'd say to you if you're interested in getting started in this field is to take the opportunity to learn as much as you possibly can. Learn about the technology of cybersecurity. You certainly need to know about the threats and vulnerabilities and controls that we use to protect against those, but also take the time to learn about your organization. Learn how to navigate politically and take into account the people side of things, because the soft skills are super important in the world of cybersecurity and one of the most often overlooked issues.
