From the course: Jira: Advanced Administration

Who is this for?

- In this course, we'll focus on the configuration areas you use most, my goal is not just for you to understand the settings, but to be able to make smart decisions when creating or changing them. Knowing the best way to solve a problem and how it will impact your application in the future is the difference between a good administrator and a great one. For each section, I've included the most important things to know, best practices and my personal tips. So you can avoid all the mistakes I've made over the years. Don't miss the challenges, quizzes, downloadable handouts, and some personal experiences, scattered throughout the course. This course helps Jira administrators better understand the settings and schemes they are configuring. The information applies to Jira software and Jira core application types. Although we won't cover managing Jira service desk feature specifically, the information in this course also applies to Jira service management, which was formerly named Jira service desk. Whether you have Jira Cloud, server or data center, the admin concepts in this course are the same. Just be aware that there are slight feature, terminology, and user interface differences between the deployment types. Don't worry if your screen looks different than mine, you might have different colors, a different layout, and customization specific to your company. I think a really good administrator is somebody who listens to what the team needs before they start making changes in Jira. And it's really easy to go in and start changing configurations and making new schemes and customizing everything. Jira is so customizable, but really what you should do first, before you point and click in Jira, is sit down, have a conversation with your users and really understand what they're trying to achieve before you build something new. If you're brand new to Jira, take my basic Jira administration course first. The basic course covers how Jira is used. The differences between application types and deployment types, navigating the admin area, the different types of admin users, and the top skills a new admin needs, like adding users, creating Jira projects, creating workflows, troubleshooting permission problems, and troubleshooting missing notifications. The advanced course will reference information from the basic course. So take it first, the goal of the basic course is to get you started quickly. In the advanced course however, we'll cover more settings in more detail, so you can expand and compliment your existing knowledge. Also sometimes Jira administrators are new to end user concepts as well. If you're an infrequent Jira user, or just want to learn more about what your end users experience, take my learning Jira courses as well. There's a version for Cloud and another version for server and data center.
