Business meal etiquette, part one

- Never do these at a business lunch. First, ordering food that requires a lot of handling. Avoid dishes that are messy or difficult to eat gracefully because you want to stay focused on the business conversation, not wrestling with your meal. Number two, picking the most expensive item on the menu. The general rule is that if someone else is paying, then we should never order something too expensive. That includes your own company or your dining companion, because this can come across as inconsiderate. Number three, making a fuss about the food. Complaining or sending food back can create a bit of uncomfortable environment, and if there's an issue that you really have to address, handle it discreetly. Number four, helping yourself to water without offering it to others first. We don't want to ignore small gestures like this because it shows courtesy and attentiveness. Number five, placing your phone on the table. This sends a signal that you're not fully engaged and can make other people feel undervalued, so keep your phone out of sight and stay fully present in the conversation.
