Retraining the brain to minimize multitasking

- Do you find yourself constantly multitasking to avoid boredom? Sometimes multitasking stems from impatience, so we continually switch between different tasks at work and in life to avoid the pain of boredom. Switching keeps things fun and exciting, right? That's because the novelty of switching stimulates dopamine release, but don't be fooled. Switching tasks actually comes at a cost. One study found it took an average of 23 minutes and 15 seconds to fully refocus after switching, so it slows down our progress. It's time to recondition your brain to resist boredom. When the urge to switch tasks strikes, resist it for just five more minutes, bring your attention back to your intention, which is to finish what you're doing. By gradually improving your capacity for longer focus periods, you'll retrain your brain and weaken the urge to multitask.
