Change your identity from overthinker to action taker
- Many of us wear the overthinker label like a badge of honor, but clinging too tightly to this identity might be exactly what's holding you back. See, your brain is constantly filtering information through what's called the reticular activating system, or the RAS. The more you tell yourself you're an overthinker, the more your RAS serves up evidence to confirm that belief. It's a self-fulfilling prophecy, but here is the good news. You can rewire this tendency, not by completely changing who you are, but by adjusting your perspective. So when you say, "Oh, I'm just a worrier," instead tell yourself, "My analytical skills are an asset "and I'm learning to channel them effectively." If the thought, "I'm someone who always needs more time," crosses your mind, then try shifting that to, "I trust my judgment "and I can make quick decisions when needed." And the idea that you are someone who just can't help, but take things personally, when that creeps in, remind yourself, "I'm perceptive about others' reactions, "which can be a strength when I don't let it stop me." Remember, you are not abandoning your ability to think deeply. You're simply giving yourself permission to be both thoughtful and decisive, deliberate and confident. It's not an either or situation. It's about finding the sweet spot where reflection meets action.
