Three years after joining the staff of a nonprofit organization, I became the executive director. Here's the thing. There's no linear, connect-the-dots process to landing this type of role. It's a complex job, and there are some days, with that foreknowledge, I might not have taken on this role. In this lesson, you'll identify the necessary skills an executive director, or ED, needs to successfully manage a nonprofit. A top priority for this role is being the single staff member who answers to the board. Your top skill for handling your board is collaboration. EDs often feel intimidated by their board, but you can't neglect proper communication and partnership because they sustain your nonprofit over time. You'll need to devote a significant amount of time and attention to your board, even though they may not always be as energizing as the direct work with the people and the causes you serve.
