Production scheduling and sequencing at the factory level
- Scheduling and sequencing are two important activities that factory managers perform every day, and they are the final step in managing the production system, taking decisions to the level of shop floor machines and jobs to be done. Scheduling refers to the assignment of start times and completion times for particular customer orders. For example, if a customer's order must be completed by a certain date, you'll use that date to create your schedule. Based on the total processing time in the factory, you back up from the completion date to determine when you must start working on that order. That's when it's scheduled on the first machine. From this point, you can schedule the start and finish time for this order at every machine and workstation throughout the process. It's now the supervisor's job to ensure that the customer's order meets the plan as scheduled, resolving issues as they arise. For me, it's always easiest to view scheduling from the perspective of the order itself…
