Managing the RACI matrix and reporting structures
- As an independent consultant, I help organizations with large initiatives. Based on my experience, the biggest indicator of success is clearly defined roles and responsibilities. Since this is a program management course, I'm going to assume you're already familiar with building a RACI matrix, even if you don't always do it for each project. So I'm not going to explain how to build one here, but I am going to explain how to keep it up to date throughout a program's lifecycle. Let's start with offboarding. When a team member leaves, you need to first determine if that person will be replaced with someone new. If not, update the RACI matrix by redistributing their tasks to other team members. If a task no longer exists, remove it from the matrix. For those that remain, spend some time thinking this through and even discuss the changes with those who will be absorbing them.
