- The board of directors have the responsibility of ensuring leadership continuity for the organization. It's a part of their risk mitigation as a whole. Even more specifically, the board's number one job is to hire the right CEO for the right time. So when it comes time to discuss succession planning with the board, they will be most focused on the CEO succession plan. When you prepare for the board, you'll want to ensure that your message is high level, but also doesn't assume that they know about succession planning. I recently had a discussion with a board member for an organization where I'm helping with their succession planning. When I asked him about the CEO's succession plan, his face went a little pale. The company has a very good CEO, and he was probably thinking, oh, wow, what if she left?
