- There's a typical structure to a team coaching session. It's not rigid, but the same key elements appear. First, we make sure everybody's relaxed and ready to learn together. We might need to remind them of the contract they've made with each other and about how they're going to behave in the session. Then we clarify the broad goal. What's the ideal outcome for the session and why is it important? Then we define it more specifically if we can. Next we explore the context. What systems are in play here? That typically leads us to redefine the issue, which leads in turn to a shift in perspective by the team. The challenge here is that people come to that insight at different speeds. So we've got the challenge of holding the team together while those who need more time catch up. That allows the team to think of different ways forward, and either to come to a decision about what to do or agree how they're going to gather more information. And finally, the team coach encourages the team…
