Ben Horowitz: “Culture is not a set of beliefs. It’s a set of actions.” Most companies define culture as values like “integrity” or “teamwork.” But those words don’t mean much until they cost you something. The real test of culture is what people do under stress, not what they say in the all-hands. You don’t define it once a quarter. You live it every day.

Organisational values are often developed (frequently by consultants) because there's a need for change. By definition, there tends to be a gap between the written values and how the organisation truly acts. If that gap is TOO BIG, it becomes hard to take the values seriously because they so obviously narrow in on eliminating weak points rather than enhancing strong points. I've seen companies embed these behavioral descriptions directly into the yearly review. Employees who think highly of themselves often get away with a perfect score, while critical thinkers who constantly seek improvement get ..well.. LESS DOUGH. This essentially reinforces the bad and demotivates the good.

Most corp pretend to have shared beliefs and never live by them. It takes conscious consistent daily efforts to live by thlae beliefs and drill it down into every single person across the org , then you can see meaningful change over time

Culture doesn't come up with a handbook, it's deeply embedded in everyone involved and like you said "Everyday!"

Culture! My favorite topic. 100% that it’s not words. In fact, great cultures don’t even need it written. Live it every day, every interaction.

I like the statement, it's your daily life.

Culture is defined by what happens when nobody is watching. No rewards given. No accolades.
