AI in IAM: Is it just talk or the real future of identity security? IAM is not just about who can access what anymore. It now does much more. It is turning into a system that is active and smart, all because of AI. → AI helps look at risk in a new way. → Authentication that changes learns how users act. → Finding identity threats sees odd things as they happen. These things are more than just small fixes. They show a big change in how we think about identity security. AI lets IAM solutions do these things: → Handle identity life cycles without people doing it. → Make fraud finding better. → Make security better overall. Think about these AI features: → Behavioral biometrics looks at habits. → Machine learning finds access that is not normal. → Natural language helps users ask questions in a simple way. These steps forward are changing IAM into a system that learns on its own and acts before problems start. But there are problems too. → We must think about keeping data private. → We need to watch for bias in how things are done. → People are still very important. AI in IAM is not just talk. 🕷️ Shadow Access: The Real Horror Story — Now with AI in the Dark 🕸️ We’ve all heard of shadow IT. But the real threat lurking in today’s environments? Shadow access — permissions and privileges that quietly accumulate, often unnoticed. A developer with admin rights they no longer need. A service account with more power than your domain admins. A contractor account that nobody remembered to disable. Now add AI-driven machine-to-machine threats to the mix. Bots, agents, and automated workflows often operate with elevated access — and rarely get reviewed. An AI model with broad API access. A forgotten integration with full database control. These non-human identities(NHIs) can access data, make API calls, and even talk to other systems. but who’s tracking what they’re doing or what permissions they have? It made me realize that as we rush to adopt AI, identity and access management has to evolve too not just for people, but for the AI that works alongside them. 83% of organizations use AI, but only 13% know how it's being used… which means, most organizations are flying blind with their data. This begs the question... is speeding into AI worth the risk? A new survey of more than 900 IT and cybersecurity professionals reveals what we expected in this AI hype cycle… while AI adoption has reached mainstream levels, enterprise security controls are struggling to keep pace. The biggest risk that has emerged is being coined "shadow identity", AI systems operating with power and speed but minimal accountability. Here are the key vulnerabilities found from the report; 1 → Agents and prompts are the weakest links 🔹 76% say autonomous AI agents are hardest to secure 🔹 70% flag external prompts to public LLMs as high-risk 🔹 40% report "shadow AI" already operating outside approved oversight 🔹 Nearly 25% have no prompt or output controls in place 🔹 Only 26% redact outputs, just 30% have runtime monitoring 2 → Identity management failing AI 🔹 Only 16% treat AI as a distinct identity class 🔹 66% have caught AI over-accessing sensitive data 🔹 21% grant AI broad access to sensitive information by default 🔹 Just 9% have fully integrated data security and identity controls for AI 🔹 77% either blur AI with humans or apply inconsistent rules 3 → Governance gaps persist 🔹 Only 7% have a dedicated AI governance team 🔹 Just 11% feel fully prepared for AI-related regulations 🔹 33% have awareness of risks but no enforcement controls 🔹 Only 11% can automatically block risky AI activity 🔹 57% remain in early maturity stages despite widespread adoption The bottom line? The report highlights something pretty important.. in all this speed to adopt AI, we've left ourselves "blind to how AI interacts with and uses our data." With adoption surging but controls lagging, AI has become both a productivity driver and one of the fastest-expanding risks that CISOs must defend. The report had a few recommendations: 1️⃣ Treating every AI pilot as production from day one 2️⃣ Containing agents with narrow scopes and explicit approvals 3️⃣ Redefining identity frameworks to treat AI as a first-class identity requiring its own governance model In the end, the question to aks yourself is the speed worth the risk? The organizations that pause to build visibility, governance, and controls now will be the ones that can safely accelerate later. Those that don't?
