It took us 5 years before we decided to take the plunge to list our products into supermarkets, because it is tremendously costly to enter modern trade. The year's sales have been fantastic, mainly because we are helicopter-parents to our brand, ensuring favorable facings and catering the right marketing effort to maximise our brand exposure. A year ago, we were speaking to a few respectable distributors and comparing the options of having Hey! Chips sell thru distributors (to achieve a better economy for everyone), and to self-distribute (more flexibility and control). As a new brand, we chose the latter in the end. I see the promising sales from a year of hard work, but I also wonder if things could have been done differently. Wondering how brands can exercise the same brand control if they had gone through a distributor (to counter agency problem)? 🤔

🍄🥩 The mycelium category receives a significant funding boost. Mycelium-based meat maker meati™ Foods has secured a significant funding boost of $100M in a C-1 funding round led by Grosvenor Food & AgTech. This funding will support the company's efforts to meet the increasing demand for its products. Meati also announced the expansion of its products into 2,000 Kroger Family Stores, including Kroger, Ralphs Grocery Company, and Mariano's, among others. The company aims to become a household name and reach 10,000 stores nationwide. Under the leadership of CEO Phil Graves, who took over from Tyler Huggins in February 2024, Meati Foods plans to continue streamlining its operations to accelerate profits. Meati's products, including its Classic cutlet and steaks, are now available in various retailers, including Kroger, Target, Whole Foods Market, as it aims to establish MushroomRoot as a leader in the alternative protein category. 👏Amazing news!👏 11 Dutch supermarkets have committed to selling at least 50% plant-based protein by 2025 and 60% by 2030 - up from the current 40%. Animal meat sales at Dutch supermarkets have already fallen by 16.4% since 2020 - achieving the 2030 goals would mean a decline by about a third from current levels. The supermarkets together represent 90% of the Dutch retail market, so this has near comprehensive buy-in - including SPAR, Picnic, Albert Heijn, Aldi, Crisp, Dirk, Ekoplaza, Jumbo, Lidl, Plus, and Odin. Additionally "in September of last year, Wakker Dier announced it was partnering with ten corporate caterers that had committed to the goal of selling 60% plant-based proteins by 2030. Just three months later, six more caterers joined the pledge." Supermarkets in other countries urgently need to follow their lead!
