Recyclable Thermoplastics Are No Longer Just a Theory A quiet revolution in composite sustainability: UK-based Met-ol Limited has developed a recyclable thermoplastic composite that combines high performance with full circularity — and it’s already outperforming traditional materials. By re-engineering polybutylene terephthalate (#PBT) into ultra-low-viscosity cyclic oligomers, they’ve made fiber impregnation as simple as pouring water. Once shaped, the material polymerizes in place to deliver the mechanical strength needed for demanding applications — from wind blades to marine and transport structures. Independent tests reveal a 40% boost in interlaminar shear strength compared to epoxy, better moisture resistance, and the ability to recover both polymer and fiber through solvolysis without significant degradation. With Europe’s landfill bans now in effect and millions of tonnes of composite waste on the horizon, this could be one of the most important material shifts in decades.
