Great article- Mr. Tertzakian lays out the mountainous landscape that lies before the industry. Even with a new pipeline, the capital investments required to fill it will likely require greenfield investment that we haven’t seen for decades and perhaps the financial backing of players who left for greener pastures elsewhere. Will they come back? And he forgot to mention this will require more roads and infrastructure. New production will require development of energy resources are far removed from the current plays. So many hurdles to get past.

This past week, Alberta Premier Danielle Smith announced that the province will sponsor a 1-million-barrel-a-day-plus oil pipeline to the northwest coast of BC. But, as Peter Tertzakian asks in this new article for The Hub Canada, even if the province gets a new pipeline, how will upstream producers fill it? Where will the capital come from for this next wave of growth? https://lnkd.in/gpp5nV-5

For a new pipeline, the upstream sector needs a lot of capital investment, and Canada needs to be a place that will attract capital, worth reading Peter Tertzakian estimate that it would take in the range of at least $100 billion to grow production enough to fill a big pipe

Canada should think twice before using public dollars to fund more oil infrastructure As #Canada looks to diversify #oil exports, the government would be wise to look at the financially troubled Trans Mountain Expansion (TMX) pipeline project as a cautionary tale. In a recent report, we found not only is the TMX project's cost billions of dollars more than originally reported, but the Canadian government is unlikely to recoup the remainder of its investment in the project. “Oil infrastructure development, once seen as a financial boon, is beset by rising costs and lower price trends,” says Mark Kalegha, one of the report's authors. Alberta Premier Danielle Smith has announced a bold new proposal to build a crude oil pipeline from Alberta to the B.C. coast, backed by a $14 million provincial contribution and an advisory group including Indigenous partners and major industry players. “This is not just a pipeline — it’s a commitment to unlock Canada’s full economic potential.” The project is meant to diversify Canada’s energy export routes while keeping taxpayers shielded from direct costs. The industry, political, and Indigenous communities will now turn their attention to the governance, regulatory alignment, and execution path ahead. https://lnkd.in/dcmg4Vxq #AlbertaLeadership #EnergyInfrastructure #CanadianEnergy
