Forty years ago, nations came together to take the first step in protecting the ozone layer – guided by science, united in action. The Vienna Convention and its Montreal Protocol became a landmark of multilateral success. Today, the ozone layer is healing. Scientists are sounding the alarm once again. We are hurtling towards pushing global temperatures 1.5 °C above pre-industrial levels, with devastating consequences. Every fraction of a degree matters. Every action counts. On this World Ozone Day, let’s recommit to preserving our ozone layer and to protecting people and planet for generations to come.
Israel, along with the U.S. is pumping some of the most noxious chemicals and pollution into the atmosphere, as it conducts a genocide against Palestinians in Gaza and the West Bank. Make them stop.
“We are hurtling towards pushing global temperatures 1.5 °C above pre-industrial levels, with devastating consequences.” Total nonsense from the Chief Alarmist again. We’ve already had one year breaching the Paris Agreement and yet nothing of note has happened. I guess he forgot that we have to have 20 years of 1.5degC above “normal” before it’s time to panic - hopefully someone reminds him before he goes into full panic mode. 🤣
General Secretary, can you please explain to us the consequences of so many nations sending tourist and exploratory rockets into outerspace for day trips or longer does not affect the ozone layer? Surely that, more than anything attacks the Ozone layer? So your caption above is nonsense when these operators act with impunity. You are suppose to be the arbitrator of the UN, and yet you fire out meaningless messages just to let people see that you are making a noise. I have know doubt that those same countries will put pressure on industry to cut back on their emmissions. Whilst you and your colleagues fly around the world in your private and chartered flights running to COP meetings and trying to level higher and higher reductions, and you fail to meet the requirements within your own organisation.
Quelle belle hypocrisie. Honte à vous.
The world came together and set policies that phased out harmful chemicals. The ozone didn’t heal overnight, but today, we’re seeing the results of that long-term action. A good example that today’s climate challenges are also within our reach! Keep pushing forward!
Dear Antonio, Sorry to contradict you with real data but the ozone layer is still dripping down as before ... from the stratosphere down into the troposphere :
António Guterres Forty years ago, the world did something extraordinary. Countries that often struggled to agree on anything came together around science and made a choice to protect the ozone layer. That decision changed the course of history. Today, we can actually see the healing. It’s a reminder that when humanity listens to science and acts collectively, real change is possible. That gives me hope. But hope alone won’t solve the climate crisis. Scientists are ringing the bell again, warning that we are dangerously close to crossing 1.5°C of warming. The difference between 1.5°C and 2°C is not just a number it’s lives, livelihoods, and entire ecosystems at stake. Every action matters. Every fraction of a degree matters. Just like the ozone fight showed us, united effort can make the “impossible” possible. On this World Ozone Day, I’m reflecting on what role each of us professionals, leaders, communities can play in writing the next success story for our planet. What’s one practical step you believe we can all take, starting today, to protect our shared home?

1moThis is very important. When I was in elementary school (1971-76) I had a wonderful science teacher who was way ahead of his times. He taught us about “Freon,” which was used in air conditioners, emphasizing that it was very damaging to the ozone layer. The Frankfurt School, and many other philosophers, have criticized opinions that emphasize nature. Nevertheless, I think we have a moral obligation to be good stewards of creation.
