DAY 1 of Making Learners Love Maths 🧮 Make Maths Real and Relatable Most students find maths “boring” because they can’t see how it connects to real life. Use local examples — market prices, football scores, cooking measurements, transport distances, rainfall data, etc. Let students estimate and calculate things around them — airtime bundles, food prices, or building materials. Bring maths into crafts and farming — measure land, count seeds, calculate profits. 🧠 When maths feels real, it starts to make sense. Example: Topic: Simple Interest – JSS/SS1 Class Activity: Ask learners to imagine they’re borrowing ₦10,000 from a local cooperative at a 5% interest rate per year to start a small business. Then let them calculate: 1⃣The interest they’ll pay after 1 year. 2⃣The total amount to be repaid. Integrating financial literacy into high school curricula is vital for preparing students for real-world financial challenges. However, deciding which existing subject it should replace is complex. Today I spoke with an 8th grade teacher who was teaching financial literacy to her class. What struck me most was that instead of diving into the financial concepts, she had to pause and backtrack—many students lacked a fundamental understanding of basic math operations: addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, percentages, and even averages. Not only did she need to provide the formulas, she also had to walk them through solving basic problems like addition and subtraction before they could even begin applying those skills to financial literacy. Sadly, when you look at the math proficiency scores for 8th graders across the country, this isn’t surprising. It’s a stark reminder that the gaps in foundational skills are very real—and they ripple into every subject area. If we want students to be truly prepared for real-world skills like financial literacy, we need to ensure they have a solid foundation in the basics first. No, this is not a joke!
