The indictment of New York Attorney General Letitia James is a dangerous assault on the rule of law. This is not an isolated incident. The administration has openly acknowledged its retribution campaign – firing federal workers with differing viewpoints, threatening and suing news organizations for their critical coverage, coercing universities and law firms to do their bidding, and investigating charitable foundations that support vulnerable communities and defend democracy. Now they are targeting Attorney General James, one of the most prominent voices challenging their agenda. Their intent to criminalize dissent is unmistakable. We cannot ignore this disturbing pattern. The administration has systematically attacked institutions and leaders, particularly leaders of color, who challenge their power and demand accountability. This is the playbook of authoritarian governments: weaponize the law to punish those who refuse to capitulate to their extreme policies. They are counting on us to stay silent and afraid. We cannot and will not let that happen. Every one of us who cares about democracy must make our stand now, before it is too late.
