"Who gets to ask the questions shapes who benefits from the answers." It baffles my mind that studies like these are conceptualized, funded, executed, and then reviewed by esteemed journals — and all along the way, people thought this was a great idea! This is a pivotal example of why representation in STEM isn’t just about diversity, it’s about directing research towards problems that actually need answers.

For too long, women’s pain has been underestimated and ignored. A common misconception is that women are “built to endure more pain” because they give birth or routinely experience debilitating period cramps. This myth has led to women’s pain being dismissed and undertreated in medical settings. Research shows otherwise. Women experience pain differently, and often more acutely, than men. They are also more likely to develop chronic pain, yet clinical trials have historically excluded them or relied on male-only samples, leaving women without the care they deserve. As Dr. Sean Mackey of Stanford University explains, “Sex differences aren’t just stronger or weaker — they are often entirely different wiring diagrams.” Neuroscientist Karen Davis adds that failing to account for those differences is “a disservice to patients who are suffering from different types of pain.” Pain is not one size fits all, and neither is care. Listening to women, investing in inclusive research, and challenging outdated assumptions are critical steps to closing the gender gap in #healthcare.

It’s shocking that women weren’t included in medical research commonly until the mid 90s. But all of that is changing now particularly with the #femtech movement. The Female Quotient Thank you to The Female Quotient for bringing attention to this important issue. 🌸 For too long, women’s pain has been minimized or dismissed, not only in healthcare but also in workplaces where symptoms are often misunderstood or ignored. At Wellness with Deneatra, we see every day how these gaps affect women’s ability to thrive. Pain is not one size fits all—and neither is care. By investing in inclusive research, creating supportive workplace cultures, and giving women access to both virtual and local resources, we can start closing the gap. It’s time for women’s voices, experiences, and health needs to be fully acknowledged—in healthcare and in the workplace. 💪

Is General Practice failing women? One of the repeated themes I noticed at the recent Menstrual Health Project conference were hearing first hand patient experiences of how their experiences with their GP had negatively affected them and their journey. I would like to believe no GP leaves the house with the aim to “not care”, but from hearing these stories care and empathy was missing. How can we make change? One suggestion which I have seen and heard a lot is establishing a direct to specialty system in the UK where instead of seeing your GP or Family Doctor you go straight to the specialist, there are many pros to the system, we know many countries that operate in this way, unfortunately there are so so many cons aswell particularly in the current structure of the NHS. Thank you to the expert panel who share wonderful insights and left me with much food for thought on what I can do locally and on a wider scale to make sure we are closing the gender care gap. October is Women’s Health Month. Despite living in the wealthiest country on earth, millions of women in the U.S. are misdiagnosed, under-treated, and priced out of care, especially Black, Indigenous, and midlife women. In honor of Women’s Health Month, I’m sharing my latest article: “The Cost of Not Listening: Why Women’s Health Equity Demands a Systems Reckoning.” This piece explores: 💬 Why U.S. women’s health outcomes are worse than in any other high-income country. 💬 How health systems dismiss women’s pain, symptoms, and hormonal shifts. 💬 Why PHI and data privacy are now reproductive justice issues 💬 What healthcare providers, insurers, employers, and state leaders must do to close the equity gap 💬 Women’s health is not a special interest. It’s infrastructure.
