As the primary research partner at the Campus, the Lincoln Institute for Rural and Coastal Health (LIRCH), based at the University of Lincoln, will lead research and community engagement that brings together local people, service providers, and change makers. Their work will focus on the issues that matter most in rural and coastal areas – from tackling loneliness to shaping better social care. Through these projects, LIRCH will help ensure that research creates real, lasting benefits for our community.

“Warm hubs were seen by respondents to my research as safe and inclusive spaces, which also fulfilled broader societal objectives around inclusivity and reducing social isolation.” Are you interested in how social science can provide evidence-based insights for policy? At the end of last month we held an event where members of the Senedd in Wales heard about two vital social science research projects offering evidence-led insights into Welsh public policy. At a lunchtime briefing event, hosted by Cefin Campbell MS (Plaid Cymru, Mid & West Wales), Dr Emily Lowthian and Ella Rabaiotti both based at Swansea University / Prifysgol Abertawe, addressed an audience of elected members, researchers, academics and civil society representatives about their work on educational trajectories of care-experienced children and warm hubs, and offered recommendations which could help improve public services in Wales. I'm really excited to see this report published from my previous workplace Institute for Community Studies! The research, which draws on the experience of six research projects funded by the The British Academy and Nuffield Foundation Understanding Communities programme, demonstrates that when done well, community-oriented research can: 🪴 support and nurture social infrastructure in place, by creating new spaces for connection and curiosity between people; 💬 provide a vital (albeit fraught!) role of "translation" between communities and policymaker needs. Future programmes or funders can help support this type of research through: - 'Seed' funding for researchers and communities to identify aligned research and community priorities. - Structuring programmes to support long term building of connections in place, such as dedicated budget lines for community outreach/follow-up after publication, or encouraging projects which produce outputs that can be picked up and developed in consequent projects in the same place. - Support early career community-oriented researchers with interactive workshops and peer support spaces. I was grateful for the chance to meet the fantastic researchers who participated in the British Academy and Nuffield Foundation's Understanding Communities programme, all of whom graciously contributed their time and insights to the findings. Many thanks also to Alex Beer, Alice Reeves from Nuffield and Dr Harriet Thompson and Adam Wright for their support throughout the insight gathering process. Anyone interested in community-oriented research should check this out, plus the final report from The British Academy and Nuffield Foundation, and the exciting research projects funded by the programme. Today, The British Academy and Nuffield Foundation’s Understanding Communities programme publishes its final report, supported by our analysis. Launched in 2022, this programme has worked to inform policy and practice on how communities can improve social wellbeing across the UK 👏 👏 👏 Our Head, and Co-Director of Research at The Young Foundation, Isabella Pereira, says: “The Understanding Communities programme demonstrates the huge potential for community-oriented research to foster social connections. Our analysis demonstrates that doing this work well requires not just huge commitment and sensitivity from research teams but the right resources to support them too.” >> Read the report https://lnkd.in/enF9NYgb >> Huge thanks to Jess Redmond, who wrote our final insight report, which you can read here: https://lnkd.in/ejYzFbKB #CommunityWellbeing #CommunityResearch #SocialConnections #Society #SocialPolicy

At #ISGlobal, we use scientific knowledge to drive actions that improve society. Today we highlight the BREATHE study, the first to analyze how traffic pollution affects schools in Barcelona and the brain development of children. This research raised public awareness, empowered civil society organizations, and inspired the ‘Protegim les Escoles’ campaign, which succeeded in reducing traffic around 217 schools. I’m very happy to share that our paper has been published in Humanities and Social Sciences Communications (Nature Portfolio)! 🎉 Our study, “Towards ageing-in-place in China: the importance of neighbourhood outdoor spaces,” explores how everyday neighbourhood environments shape older people’s ability to live healthily and independently in their own communities. Highlights: 1️⃣ Neighbourhood outdoor spaces play a vital role in supporting older people’s physical activity, social interaction, and daily wellbeing. 2️⃣ Family and social ties are double-edged: while neighbours, spouses, and children often encourage and accompany outdoor activities, caregiving duties such as looking after grandchildren can reduce time and opportunities for going out. 3️⃣ Community differences matter — work-unit and commodity housing communities show distinct needs and expectations for local care services. 4️⃣ Active adaptation & participation: older people co-create and maintain communal spaces, but their voices need to be better integrated into age-friendly renewal projects. 💡 The paper calls for urban design and community renewal that genuinely support healthy, inclusive ageing and empower residents to participate in shaping their environments. Grateful to my co-authors Karim Hadjri, Helen Woolley, and Jie Xiong for their inspiring collaboration and guidance throughout this work. 🌿 Here’s the online link to the article: 👉 https://lnkd.in/eEt-KAMj
