A breakthrough method known as apical rooted cuttings (ARC) is transforming the speed and efficiency of delivering improved potato varieties to farmers in India and Africa. Traditionally, scaling up new varieties has been a slow, multi-year process, leaving farmers with limited access to market-preferred or disease-resistant seed. ARC enables rapid multiplication of clean, early-generation seed, reducing the time to market from six years to as little as two. With this innovation, healthy, high-yielding potatoes can reach more farmers faster, boosting incomes, food security, and resilience. The method also empowers local seed entrepreneurs, bringing seed production closer to communities where it’s needed most. 𝐂𝐚𝐛𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐭 𝐂𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐬 𝐑𝐬 𝟏𝟏,𝟒𝟒𝟎 𝐂𝐫𝐨𝐫𝐞 𝐌𝐢𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐭𝐨 𝐌𝐚𝐤𝐞 𝐈𝐧𝐝𝐢𝐚 𝐒𝐞𝐥𝐟-𝐒𝐮𝐟𝐟𝐢𝐜𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐢𝐧 𝐏𝐮𝐥𝐬𝐞𝐬 𝐁𝐲 𝟐𝟎𝟑𝟏. A major step towards Aatmanirbhar Bharat in agriculture! The Union Cabinet has approved the ₹11,440 crore Mission for Aatmanirbharta in Pulses (2025–31) to make India self-sufficient in pulse production and reduce import dependency by 2031. India, the world’s largest producer and consumer of pulses, still imports 15–20% of its needs. This six-year mission aims to change that by: ✅ Distributing 126 lakh quintals of certified seeds across 370 lakh hectares ✅ Expanding cultivation by 35 lakh hectares in rice fallow & diversifiable areas ✅ Providing 88 lakh free seed kits to promote crop diversification ✅ Establishing 1,000 processing & packaging units (with subsidies up to ₹25 lakh) ✅ Ensuring 100% procurement of Tur, Urad & Masoor under PM-AASHA for four years. The mission will promote high-yield, pest-resistant, climate-resilient varieties, supported by ICAR and tracked through the SATHI portal. Alongside, farmers will benefit from modern training in mechanisation, soil health, and sustainable practices. By 2030-31, India targets 350 lakh tonnes of pulses, higher yields (1,130 kg/ha), and expanded cultivation (310 lakh hectares). This initiative is set to boost farmer incomes, save forex, generate rural jobs, and strengthen food security. #AatmanirbharBharat #Agriculture #FoodSecurity #FarmersFirst #Sustainability #RuralDevelopment #Pulses #PMASHA

Mission Aatmanirbharta in Pulses: A Big Step for India’s Food Security & Farmer Prosperity On October 1st, 2025, the Union Cabinet approved a ₹11,440 crore mission to make India self-sufficient in pulses by 2030-31, with a target of 350 lakh tonnes of production. (Source: The Times of India) Here’s why this matters: -Despite being the world’s largest producer and consumer of pulses, India continues to rely on imports to meet domestic demand. -The mission focuses on research, better seed systems, area expansion, and assured procurement (Tur, Urad, Masoor). -Plans include distributing 126 lakh quintals of certified seeds, covering 370 lakh hectares, and setting up 1,000 post-harvest processing units. -Over the next 4 years, farmers registered under the scheme will benefit from 100% assured procurement through the Price Support Scheme. Expected outcomes: -Stronger farmer incomes -Reduced import dependency (saving valuable foreign exchange) -Improved soil health and crop diversification -Greater resilience to climate variability Why this is a bold move (and a necessary one): -Agricultural sovereignty requires deep investment — in production, infrastructure, and value chains. -The success of this mission will hinge on effective state-level cooperation and timely rollout of infrastructure. -Unlocking the potential of rice fallows and marginal lands for pulse cultivation could be a game-changer. -If implemented well, this could become a template for self-reliance in other crops like oilseeds and millets. India’s push for pulse self-sufficiency is not just about numbers — it’s about nutrition security, farmer prosperity, and long-term sustainability. #AatmanirbharBharat #Agriculture #FoodSecurity #Farmers #Policy #Pulses
