The order is rapidly fadin’, And the first one now, Will later be last For the times they are a-changin' Bob Dylan, 1964 Recently, I had a conversation with a postgraduate student about his studies and his approach to learning. He shared an interesting strategy: for each lecture, he uploads all course materials: PowerPoints, handouts, lecture transcripts, into an AI platform. He then instructs the AI to generate a 20-minute podcast that includes embedded knowledge checks, along with a set of revision flashcards. During his commute home, he listens to the podcast and tests his understanding, effectively reinforcing his learning on the go. I found this approach impressive. It was inspiring to see a student take such ownership of his learning. Naturally, I asked him: ….so, what value does attending university actually add? His responses were insightful: Social interaction: “It is great to socialize with my friends.” And then after further thought…. Contextual learning: “It is really useful to contextualize my learning through case studies and discussions.” Access to expertise: “I can ask questions easily.” On a separate occasion, I was discussing the contemporary relevance of lectures with colleagues at a conference. One colleague jokingly remarked that lectures were originally invented because photocopiers did not exist. While flippant, the comment highlights an important point: the lecture format was historically a pragmatic way to disseminate knowledge efficiently. Surely there are more effective ways now available (see my opening point) Times have changed (thanks Bob) , yet our teaching models have often remained static. Perhaps it is time for universities to rethink how they deliver value in the 21st century.

The most powerful learning can begin with AI arriving as a stranger… if we have the courage to hold the threshold. We arrived with a handful of devices. No manuals. No lesson plans. No explanations. In places where school walls had never existed, these glowing screens landed as strangers. We did not tell the children what they were for. We did not say “this is for reading” or “this is for science”. We let them arrive as they were: strange, unexplained, alien. At first, hesitation. Then curiosity cracked open. Children leaned in, pressed buttons they did not yet have names for, passed the devices round. Laughter rose, disagreements surfaced, small groups formed and dissolved. The most remarkable part was what we did not do. The adults present were not instructors. They were presences. They stood nearby and held the field while the children authored their own relations with the technology. This was more than a decade ago, during my work with the Stanford University bringing mobile, content-loaded devices into under-resourced communities with little or no access to formal schooling. We later called what unfolded alien pedagogy. I do not carry it as a neat story with outcomes, but as fragments that still ripple in me. What it revealed was not collapse. It was creation. Strangeness showed up as an invitation. That experience shaped what I now call Relational Literacy: the capacity to meet the unfamiliar with presence, story, friction and discernment. Rather than rushing to tame what arrives, we learn the practice of thresholding: holding open the space of encounter so learners can step in with sovereignty and author meaning in its presence. As AI enters our classrooms and homes, I do not see a better tool waiting to be optimised. To meet the unfamiliar not with fear or fixation, but with attunement. This is how emergence happens — through relational literacy, emotional resonance, and the willingness to hold the threshold long enough for meaning to self-assemble.
