“For the public good” is good for all of us. Offering my expertise to non-profits brings me much satisfaction and joy. Helping others builds community, raises skill sets, enriches lives, and pays back a millionfold. I started doing free work as a student in the “Aware” group at fifteen. We did simple things, helping older adults or the less fortunate, like walking someone’s dog, getting groceries, or painting their flat. I’ve continued as my skill sets expanded and have never looked back. If you have a little spare time and a not-so-special or special skill, share it with others. Communication is key according to new advice from existing volunteers 🙋♀️ The importance of aligning expectations when you’re talking to an organisation about volunteering features strongly in our new blog containing advice for new volunteers, by volunteers. It’s important to have honest and open conversations about what both sides expect from the role, how you will work and what training and support you’ll receive. Some organisations have fantastic volunteer managers, but if that’s not the case where you are volunteering, then this sort of open communication is even more important. Working in a new organisation with new people offers learning and development opportunities and it may well be worth compromising on some of your initial expectations. But if you feel it’s really not right and conversations haven’t helped, it might not be the right opportunity for you.
