Really exciting to see this partnership come to life. Stripe + OpenAI means smarter, faster, and more intuitive ways to power payments and commerce experiences. This collaboration will make it easier for businesses everywhere to scale and for users to interact with digital products in more natural, efficient ways.

From today, ChatGPT users in the US can shop and transact directly thanks to the new Agentic Commerce Protocol, built (and open sourced!) by OpenAI and Stripe and with support for two of the largest marketplaces on earth - Etsy and Shopify - coming first. 💥

Interesting and important move from Shopify and Stripe — but also a bit reminiscent of when Toys R Us partnered with Amazon. That story didn’t end well: Amazon learned everything it needed from TrU while TrU loaded up on debt and ceded customer relationships. Another nail in the coffin. Now the big questions: Could OpenAI build a commerce platform if it chose to? Would OpenAI actually do that, or is it outside its operating model? More broadly — what won’t OpenAI do? Where are the boundaries of its ambitions? Curious to hear others’ hypotheses here.

And just like that, ChatGPT evolves from a powerful search-and-advice tool into a direct commerce platform, collapsing discovery, decision, and payment into a single step 🚀 A clear signal of how #AI is beginning to compress the #digital customer journey

This is a huge step forward for online shopping. It solves a common frustration: having to switch between apps or websites just to make a purchase. Now, you can discover a product and buy it all within a single chat. It makes the whole process smoother for shoppers and gives merchants on Etsy and Shopify a powerful new way to reach customers right when they're ready to buy. It’s a signal to think about a future where the path to purchase may not even start on our own app or website.

E-commerce brands are the early adopters. OpenAI just closed the loop - from demand to purchase - through integrations with Stripe and other third-party providers. So, what’s next?
