I've been listening to and reading about President Carter’s life over the last couple of weeks. Though I was too young to remember him vividly in his presidential role, his service to others post-presidency has long inspired me. His actions epitomized philanthropy — not just funding nonprofits but also working in community, like when he and Rosalynn Carter built homes in West Garfield Park with Habitat for Humanity in the 1980s. May his life’s work — an authentic expression of love for humanity — continue to inspire us to do our best with and for one another. #HonoringCarter

The power of collaboration of between American Leadership Forum senior fellows: In a heartening display of community spirit, Habitat for Humanity Merced/Stanislaus Counties (senior fellows Anita Hellam & Ashlee Williams) has partnered with PG&E Corporation Foundation (senior fellow Michael Gaffney), Calvary Assembly of God Church, and local organizations to address the housing crisis following the severe storms and flooding that ravaged Merced and Stanislaus counties earlier this year. Habitat for Humanity Merced/Stanislaus Counties CEO Anita Hellam emphasized the devastation in various regions, with many survivors still residing in damaged structures or transitional housing. To support the long-term volunteers working on reconstruction projects, a unique collaboration emerged between Habitat for Humanity and the Calvary Assembly of God Church, led by Pastor Juan Ochoa. A grant from PG&E Corporation Foundation has made it possible to renovate a church-owned property in Merced, transforming it into temporary housing for volunteers. Michael Gaffney, Division Operations Representative of PG&E's Central Valley Region, celebrated the partnership and its reflection of shared values in fostering compassionate, resilient communities. This remarkable joint effort also includes contributions from Habitat for Humanity California, Habitat for Humanity International, First 5 of Merced County, and donations of materials and supplies to the Habitat ReStore. The project aims to provide a comfortable living space for dedicated volunteers traveling from across the nation to assist in rebuilding efforts over the next three years. #ALFseniorfellow #americanleadershipforum #collaboration #community

Serving humanity involves reaching out to underprivileged villages, where basic needs often go unmet. By providing access to clean water, education, healthcare, and economic opportunities, we can help transform lives and create lasting change. True service means empowering communities with tools and knowledge, fostering self-reliance and dignity. Listening to their needs and collaborating on sustainable solutions builds trust and mutual respect. Whether through volunteering, donating resources, or advocating for social justice, every small action contributes to a greater impact. Reaching out to these forgotten corners of the world reminds us of our shared humanity and the power of compassion. Teach For America Alicia-Ann Caesar, MPA, MBA T. My relationship with community recovery goes back to my earliest days… I was two-years-old when Cyclone Tracy hit Darwin. Our parents sheltered us in the bath with a mattress over our heads. The next day we went looking for my mother's eternity ring, her Christmas gift from my dad. Amazingly, we found it amongst the rubble that was once our house. It was Australia's most deadly cyclone. Our father stayed to rebuild the town while we moved to Toowoomba where my extended family lived. The thing is, as bad as that event was, it wasn't the worst thing that happened to us. We were lucky we survived. My dad was a carpenter raised in the bush with the skills to rebuild. We had a significant extended family and a community that supported us. We were able to survive and thrive. It remains a powerful experience for our family that grounds me. Today as I work as a practitioner as CEO for Australian Business Volunteers (ABV), it's so important to me that no one gets left behind. Catastrophic events don't have to be catastrophic for everyone. Communities can be prepared for the event, for both the immediate response and the recovery. These are approaches we need to deploy even more in response to Climate Change. In the 21st century that cohesion and belonging can be lacking. Back then, I had a huge extended family. We went to church and we all knew each other. Everybody knew if there was something wrong in a family, a death or a challenge. We all kinda mucked in. But now there's greater mobility, greater loneliness. We have to be more intentional in the ways we build community. What kind of activities have you found help build your community? Zena Armstrong Melanie Bloor Natascha Wernick Amy Crawford GAICD Jessica Forrest Mark Duckworth PSM #communitybuilding #socialcapital #disasterresilience #volunteering (and yes, that's me at 2 years old in Darwin before the Cyclone)
