ABM Precast Solutions rebuilds Marcon Place Underbridge for Network Rail

Removing a bridge in the middle of a live rail corridor is never just demolition. It is a test of brownfield delivery discipline. Across our 60-hour Inland Rail possession, our teams dismantled the 80-year-old Kemp Street bridge comprising six spans and five trestles, totalling almost 500 tonnes of steel and concrete. Every stage was planned around live rail operations, with track, signalling and adjacent infrastructure left undisturbed to ensure the corridor was handed back safely and ready for trains.
 This is what brownfield delivery demands: compressing weeks of work into hours, sequencing multiple workfronts within tight constraints, and maintaining absolute focus on safety and operational readiness. It is where rail experts prove their capability by planning every movement, aligning disciplines, and ensuring that when the possession closes the network is ready to go. I had the incredible opportunity to witness the breakthrough of Elizabeth, the 125-metre-long Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM), at Washwood Heath marking the completion of HS2’s Birmingham approach tunnels and the full 28 miles of deep-bore tunnelling between London and the West Midlands. Launched from Water Orton in March 2024, Elizabeth and her sister TBM Mary Ann have successfully completed the twin 3.5-mile Bromford tunnels beneath the M6 and the eastern outskirts of Birmingham. Together, these engineering giants excavated over 1.8 million tonnes of material and installed 5,804 concrete ring segments, with the excavated spoil helping to shape the new railway’s landscape. During this year-and-a-half-long journey, the team navigated under major infrastructure including the M6 motorway, National Grid assets, and the River Tame at depths of up to 40 metres. The scale of coordination, engineering precision, and teamwork behind this success truly showcases what the UK infrastructure sector can achieve. 🇦🇺 North East Link milestone!     The Spark North East Link Tunnels D&C team have completed the very first roof slab pour! This pour was the first of the 500 precast beams that will be developed for installation in Bulleen. These slabs will pave the way for Yarra Link Green Bridge works to commence.      Beams by numbers:    📏 30 m long     ⚖️ Weighing up to 130 tonnes each      #webuild, as part of the Spark Joint Venture, is delivering the North East Link tunnels. Launched near Water Orton in March 2024, Elizabeth joins sister machine Mary Ann in completing the twin 3.5-mile Bromford tunnels that will carry trains beneath the M6 and eastern outskirts of Birmingham. Together, the two TBMs have excavated more than 1.8 million tonnes of material and installed 5,804 concrete ring segments, with the spoil being used to help landscape the new railway’s approaches to the city. During their year-and-a-half-long mission, the team on board the 1,600-tonne machines worked at depths of up to 40 metres. They navigated Elizabeth and Mary-Ann under the M6 motorway, key National Grid infrastructure and the River Tame, which they crossed four times. Meanwhile, separate teams were focused on supplying the concrete ring segments and removing the spoil as well as beginning work on the cross passages and the ventilation shaft at Castle Vale. Governor Hochul has announced the completion of Phase 1 of the MTA's Park Avenue Viaduct replacement. Halmar International has completed the $590 million first phase of the MTA’s Park Avenue Viaduct project ahead of schedule and under budget. The project replaced 8,240 feet of aging track and 128 bridge installations while keeping Metro-North service operational. Skanska-Fay JV announced today that it substantially completed its work on CSX's Howard Street Tunnel Project in Baltimore. Using some unusual equipment, including a custom railcar-mounted gantry, and leveraging progressive design-build to improve their methods throughout the project, the team was able to replace the tunnel invert to increase its clearance by about 2 ft. #construction #engineering #railroad #tunnel #infrastructure
