Observing animals is one of the oldest forms of inspiration. For roboticists, it's the key to unlocking new levels of agility. This fascinating research shows how studying the incredible acrobatics of a squirrel can teach a robot how to perfect its landing. This is the Salto-1P, a remarkable jumping robot from the Biomimetic Millisystems Lab at UC Berkeley. By analyzing high-speed footage of squirrels leaping between branches, the researchers identified key strategies for adjusting mid-air and landing on narrow targets. They then translated this into a control algorithm for the robot.
